About the Project:
This project was a class assignment set up to improve a skill of our choice over the span of 14 weeks. After getting back into digital drawing a few months prior, I decided to focus on making digital portraiture.
The requirement for this assignment was to have at least 7 pieces that go together in order to adequately show our progress over time. Application and dimensions were open to our own representation for our work.
The Challenge:
My main goal for this project was to improve my ability to draw people as that is an area of drawing that I thought needed improvement. Over the 14 weeks, combining portraiture study and digital drawing was key to improving the skill of my choice. Time management was also an important aspect of this assignment in order to have enough time to get each drawing done on a weekly basis.
Process:
Finding a good set of reference images was the first step before I could start creating my drawings. I decided to make 10 drawings so I could evenly split my portraits among male and female models. Having a diverse group of individuals to draw was something I strived for as I wanted to draw many unique and contrasting individuals.
Sketches were drawn over the references to create proper proportions and placement of elements. After all the details and outlines were in place, color was added underneath to include proper hues from the hair, skin tone, clothes, and other features. Finally, a colorful background color was placed to make the portrait pop.
The creation of one of the portraits is shown below with images of the individual layers in order from left to right.
Digital Mockups:
The 10 finalized drawings are shown in order from left to right below in order to show the progress throughout the 14 weeks of this project. These drawings were formatted to fit the standard Instagram dimensions of 1080 px by1080 px.
